Odyssey fans got a sneak peak at this excellent Peaberry selection from Kenya. Explore it again or for the first time with a limited release set for Monday's roast day.
It's been quite some time since we've released a Peaberry selection. For those not aware, a Peaberry is a genetic mutation that happens within some coffee cherries (estimated to be less than 5% of the time) wherein said cherry produces just one seed / bean instead of the usual two. These beans are smaller and rounder, yet burst with flavor as all of the complex sugars are concentrated to a single seed.
This selection is from the Othaya Farmer's Cooperative Society, which was also the Co-Op responsible AB Grade Chinga we shipped for Odyssey last fall. The peaberry mutations in this coffee are from several different cultivars common in Kenya: SL-28 SL-34, and Ruiri-11.
In the cup, there is a surprising amount of spice right up front, with dried fruit and cinnamon in the fragrance, with an acidity that has vivid brightness but is tempered by a softer body and sugary sweet finish. This is a coffee we would recommend sipping slowly, it is sure to be very dynamic with flavors that will continue to evolve as the cup cools. We recommend going hotter with your water to bring out the wilder side this Kenyan has to offer, while going cooler will accentuate its dried fruit characteristics.
All online orders are roasted to order and added to our next roast date. We roast Mondays and Wednesdays, orders placed by 8AM on roast days will be roasted that day, otherwise the coffee will be roasted on our next roast date.
